Idols raising funds, awareness

The Food Bank of south Central Michigan will be receiving $14,908 to help fight childhood hunger.

The Charity Projects Entertainment Fund teamed up with the popular Fox Television program “American Idol” to raise money in April 2007.

The money will be used to help expand the Food Bank’s Kids’ After-School Snack Pack Program, which provides wholesome food for students who may not have much to eat after they leave school. Studies have shown that children who are hungry are more likely to be ill and absent from school. There is a definite link between proper nutrition and success in school.

The Food Bank of South Central Michigan received the grant as a result of the membership in America’s Second Harvest: the Nation’s Food Bank Network. ASH was one of four domestic charities to receive the funding.

The Food Bank of South Central Michigan serves a 275 member hunger-relief network, helping area families in Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee and St. Joseph counties. The Food Bank is a member of America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network and the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The Food Bank is also a United Way program delivery partner.
