430 interviews with recipients of emergency food services were conducted between early February and the end of April, 2009. In addition, 233 member agencies of the Food Bank completed agency surveys. This data will be analyzed and a local Hunger Study was released in early 2010.

BACKGROUND

Hunger In America 2010 is part of a series of national hunger studies conducted every four years by Feeding America. These studies provide the most extensive, up-to-date research available on hunger in the United States. For a complete summary of the national 2010 Hunger Study. Click here.

Locally, the Food Bank of South Central Michigan participatedin Hunger in America 2010. From early February through the end of April, 2009, 430 Client Interviews were conducted with recipients of emergency food at 40 sites in eight counties. These sites included soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters. Three teams of volunteers, based in Battle Creek, Jackson and Kalamazoo, totaling 52 individuals helped conduct the interviews. A separate Member Agency Survey was also completed by 233 (or 91%) of the Food Bank's member agencies.

The Client Interviews were administered one-on-one, with emphasis on respect and privacy, with recipients of emergency food services answering a series of questions focusing on household make-up, housing, health, income and access to food resources. Interviewers were given extensive training which emphasized the completely voluntary nature of the interview.

The Member Agency Survey included information on the number of households being served, volunteer involvement, and importance of the food bank network to the member agency.

All of this information was sent to Mathematica Policy Research, located in Princeton, N.J. Mathematica has a proven track record of providing excellence in public policy analysis and had been chosen by Feeding America to conduct the past two Hunger Studies, as well as Hunger in America 2010. WHY CONDUCT A STUDY?

Grantors and policy makers are increasingly asking for detailed analysis of the need in order to make informed decisions on funding or changes in public policy. Hunger in America 2010 provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date information on the extent of hunger and why households are in need of food. In fact, almost every county in the United States will be represented in this Study. No other public policy analysis, save the U.S. Census, can make this claim.
