In 1982 the Food Bank of South Central Michigan was incorporated and in 1983 moved into a house on Washington Avenue in Battle Creek donated by John & Marilyn Doty. Pat Hirzel and Jack Curtis, while working at the Kellogg Company, helped head up initial efforts to establish a food bank in Battle Creek, being joined by Harriet Pierman. Start up funding for the Food Bank was provided by the Miller Foundation and the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo.
For a period of time the Food Bank was located in a former cold storage facility in Marshall at 100 Page St. Since late 1989 the Food Bank has been operating out of its distribution center located at 5451 Wayne Road, in Battle Creek's Ft. Custer Industrial Park.
