Canned Sculpture Exhibit
What is the Canned Sculpture Exhibit?
The Canned Sculpture Exhibit is a unique, community-based activity to benefit the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Participating groups agree to create and construct a sculpture made primarily of non-perishable food items. The sculpture should be no larger than 10 feet (height) x 10 feet (length) x 10 feet (width).
Traditionally the Exhibit runs during the last week of April into the first week of May at the Lakeview Square Mall. Since the Sculpture Exhibit’s inception the Mall has served as the host for this event and Scene Magazine has been the sponsor.
WHAT DOES MY GROUP NEED?
You’ll need a core group of about 6-8 people to design your masterpiece, collect or purchase your food and construct your sculpture at the Mall. In the past, some participating groups have joined together to design and build their sculpture. While collaboration is encouraged, participating groups cannot solicit the general public for donations of money or food for their sculpture.
Each sculpture should have a minimum of 600 units (cans or boxes) of non-perishable food, in addition to any support material needed to create the sculpture. Your group will also need a pick-up truck or similar vehicle to transport your food and construction materials to the Mall on the night of set up and to take the construction materials back from the Mall the evening of teardown.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PARTICIPATING?
Being part of the Canned Sculpture Exhibit is a real morale booster. Members of your workplace or service club have a change to work with each other outside of a normal business or service club environment. Additionally your organization will receive the benefit of being before the public spotlight in the Lakeview Square Mall during the length of the Exhibit. The Mall is one of the most heavily trafficked places in Calhoun Country, right off of I-94. Thousands of local residents will see your creation. The Food Bank will send out press releases regarding the Exhibit to local print and electronic media to alert them. These press releases will include the names of participating groups.
There will be both a pre-event planning meeting to help participating groups prepare for the Sculpture Exhibit, as well as a post-event meeting to receive feedback from the participating groups.
