What is the Empty Bowl?
The Empty Bowl Project is the brainchild of two art instructors at Bloomfield Hills searching for a way to raise funds for a food drive.  What developed was a fund raising event that incorporated making ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal.

The Food Bank of South Central Michigan initiated its own version of this activity in 1992, linked to the Cereal Festival in Battle Creek.  The Empty Bowl represents the hunger that many children face.

The Empty Bowl Exhibit has been developed to consist of 3 separate Empty Bowl Collections which are:

¨ Student Bowls (about 600) created by students in local school systems under the guidance of their art instructors.
¨ Dignitary Bowls (about 40) usually made in March by local
leaders, under the supervision of Jan Cramer, art instructor at Springfield Middle School & some of her students. Click here to see pictures of this year's dignitaries in action.
¨
Signature Bowls (about 50) created by 15-25 professional artists.

Each collection is offered to the general public during the Cereal Festival on Saturday, June14th, 2008 (the second Saturday in June each year). Each collection has its own donation category and are marked accordingly at the exhibit.

Each year the food bank solicits corporate sponsors of the event which help to underwrite materials and signage. The 2008 sponsors include: Battle Creek Optimist Club, Binda Foundation, Kellogg's Corporate Citizenship Fund, Southern Michigan Bank & Trust and is supported by Battle Creek Public Schools and the Art Center of Battle Creek.

The Empty Bowl Project is under the guidance of the Empty Bowl Planning Committee, led by event chairs Robert & Eleanor DeVries.

Schools supporting this year's Empty Bowl event include:
Battle Creek Public Schools
Athens Middle School and High School
Harper Creek High School
Lakeview High School
Pennfield Middle School and High School
St. Philip Middle School and High School
Arts & Industry Council
