Battle Creek area students will be donning their
“Souper” hero personas during the annual Michigan Education Association
“Souper Kids” campaign to benefit the Food Bank of South Central
Michigan. As part of this Spring Food Raiser event, students and support
staff will be collecting canned soup at their schools.
Last year the Souper Kids collected 8,277 pounds
of soup and raised $3,036 to help the Food Bank in the fight against
hunger. The food is distributed through the 275 member agency network
served by the Food Bank. Approximately 39 percent of those served by the
Food Bank are children. Seventy-two percent of households served by the
Food Bank are living below the poverty line. This fact makes the
collection even more relevant for the students.
Soup is a staple item for the Food Bank. “Soup is
definitely something that we need. The students could not be more
practical in their focus,” said operations director Cheryl Proctor.
“It’s wonderful to have the MEA offer kids a way to be active in helping
their peers who are at risk of going hungry.”
The students will be collecting soup throughout
the month of March.
The Food Bank of South Central Michigan is a
