Food Bank of South Central Michigan
We serve as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor
of food on behalf of our more than 250 member agencies who are non-profit organizations
and churches serving the needy.
The Food Bank of South Central Michigan is a non-profit, tax-exempt
501(c)(3) organization.
Our distribution center is located in Battle Creek's Fort Custer Industrial
Park. The 30,000 square foot facility includes 45,000 cubic feet of cold storage.
The Food Bank of South Central Michigan began in 1983 and since that
time has distributed more than 69 million pounds of food.
The Food Bank of South Central Michigan is a member of America's
Second Harvest, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization.
We are also a member of the
Food Bank Council of Michigan. We are a United Way funded
organization.
Who does The Food Bank of South Central
Michigan help?
Our 250 member, non-profit agency network serves meals or emergency food boxes to
over 60,000 individuals each year (Hunger in
America, 2001).
These agencies operate emergency shelters, soup kitchens, church run
emergency pantries, senior citizen meal programs, youth programs and day care centers.
39% of all household members served by the Food Bank's
network are children 17 years of age or younger;
13% of all adult clients at Food Bank agency sites are seniors 65 years of age
or older.

Food Bank Service Area
We distribute food to our member agency non-profit network in eight counties,
including Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, Jackson, Lenawee
and St. Joseph.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, there are 848,255 people in the Food
Bank's service area. 83,508 of the people in the Food Bank's service area
are living in poverty (U.S. Census estimate from 2000 data).
